Travel Mistakes to Avoid

Avoidable Travel Mistakes:

  1. Not making sure that the things you want to see are open when you plan to visit them.

  2. Not factoring in the costs of food, excursions, extras you will want or need while you travel.

  3. Not booking early. Get the best prices on a flexible rate and ensure you have accommodations. Some popular places will be fully booked far in advance.

  4. Not double checking flight details. Make sure you know about layovers, time zones, etc. Make sure your connections are not too close, or you risk missing them.

  5. Not double checking your passport to be sure it’s valid and will still be valid when you travel. Some places require that it not expire for months after your visit!

  6. Not double checking to be sure you have your passport and other important documents with you before leaving.

  7. Not checking for visa, application, or vaccination requirements. Covid isn’t the only vaccine that some places will require.

  8. Not telling your credit card companies and bank that you will be traveling out of the  country.

  9. Having too much planned. You don’t want to burn out. Be realistic in your expectations and prioritize.

  10. Overpacking. Ever heard of a capsule wardrobe? It’s a great way to be sure not to overpack. Select lightweight and easy to wash/dry items or items that can be worn multiple times.

  11. Not getting travel insurance. Especially for travels out of the country.

  12. Not learning about local culture and laws for where you are going.

  13. Bringing valuable items you don’t really need.

  14. Sticking only to touristy restaurants. You can likely find better food at a better price if you do a little research.

  15. Not bringing emergency cash with you. If your cards are stolen, you will be glad you had it.

  16. Not exchanging money while you are still at home. It can be more expensive at the airport or on the go.

  17. Not backing up pictures. A portable hard drive or cloud storage will make sure you don’t lose your memories.

  18. Not making copies of your documents. Keep a safe digital copy accessible to you, perhaps a password protected PDF version.
